Barrick internship enhances education, skills development

MARA: AS Tanzania continues to attract investment across diverse sectors and embraces rapid technological advancements, deliberate action is needed to ensure that all Tanzanians, especially the youth, fully benefit from these emerging opportunities.
Barrick Gold Corporation, is embracing this people-first approach through its strategic partnership with the government under Twiga Minerals Corporation. The company has introduced a range of initiatives focused on education, skills development and youth empowerment, particularly targeting communities surrounding its Bulyanhulu and North Mara mines.
During the recent unveiling of Barrick’s Sustainable Strategy Implementation Report, the company’s President and CEO, Mr Mark Bristow, reaffirmed Barrick’s commitment to education as a cornerstone of its global sustainability agenda.
“We are committed to improving education in all the communities where we operate, including here in Tanzania,” said Mr Bristow during a recent visit. “That’s why we continue to invest in education-focused projects that unlock the potential of young people.”

Interns who have participated in Barrick’s programmes consistently commend the company’s strong mentorship culture and its commitment to community development.
“What impressed me most was the emphasis on mentorship and the company’s broader impact in areas like water source protection, occupational safety and community engagement,” said one intern.
Each year, Barrick offers internship opportunities to university students from Tanzanian institutions, providing practical, on-the-job experience across various disciplines. These placements enable students to apply academic knowledge in real-world settings while gaining valuable industry skills in both the mining and business sectors.
The company also runs a one-year graduate internship programme for recent university and college graduates. Participants are paired with experienced mentors and rotate through different departments to gain hands-on industry exposure.
“The graduate programme provides essential exposure that significantly improves employability,” said one of the programme coordinators. “Many participants have gone on to secure full-time employment with Barrick after completing the programme.”
In addition to internships, Barrick offers a two-year Graduate Programme designed to deepen professional expertise in mining-related fields. Through close mentorship, participants build specialised knowledge and skills that prepare them for long-term careers in the industry.
The company has also launched a First Entry Programme targeting non-skilled youth from villages near its mining operations. These young individuals receive on-site training in basic technical skills, providing a practical pathway to employment either within the mines or in other industries.
Barrick’s commitment to youth development extends beyond technical training. The company actively supports educational symposiums and student engagement platforms throughout Tanzania. Collaborating with organisations such as AIESEC a global youth leadership network, Barrick delivers mentorship and real-world learning experiences.
Barrick professionals regularly participate in university events, offering expert talks and workshops that guide students on how to translate their education and skills into solutions for real-world challenges.
