NLD pledges practical education to curb unemployment

SIMIYU: THE National Liberty Democratic Party (NLD) Presidential candidate and the party’s Secretary-General, Hassan Doyo, has pledged to transform Tanzania’s education system to address unemployment and boost innovation among young people.

Speaking during a campaign rally in Lamadi Village, Busega District in Simiyu Region, Doyo said the current education system focuses too much on theory, leaving many graduates without practical skills to secure jobs or start businesses.

“For over 64 years of independence, our education has emphasized theory over practice. In countries like China, children as young as four already learn practical skills. By adulthood, they are ready to contribute to national development. Tanzania has not yet reached that stage,” Doyo explained.

According to the NLD manifesto, the party plans a major overhaul to ensure every student leaves school equipped with skills to thrive independently.

The program includes establishing research and technology centers in every region and council, enabling youth to innovate, develop new technologies, and provide expert advice to the government.

“We want education that directly solves unemployment. Youth empowered with technical and technological skills will no longer depend on their parents. We aim to eliminate the cycle where parents invest in education only for graduates to return home without opportunities,” Doyo said.

The manifesto also emphasizes linking education reforms with universities in technology, technical skills, and innovation to ensure students graduate with real work experience.

“Today, many employers demand three years of experience before hiring. We reject that. With the new system, every graduate will have the skills and practical experience to join the job market or start their own business immediately,” he added.
