Alliance One tree project brings hope to Buhigwe

KIGOMA: ALLIANCE One Tobacco Tanzania’s tree-planting project in Buhigwe District, Kigoma is expected to reduce reliance on natural forests for firewood and safeguard the environment for future generations.
The farm, projected to yield 67,000 trees with a potential market value of 400m/-, also provides sustainable resources for tobacco curing, benefiting both the community and government.
Buhigwe Farm Forestry Officer Robert Mogera said the project began last November with land preparation, hole digging and planting of fastgrowing, drought-resistant Eucalyptus trees.
“The Buhigwe project is designed to provide sustainable firewood for tobacco curing while protecting natural forests,” he said over the weekend.
Forest and Environmental Projects Manager Rashid Salum said Alliance One has been running tree-planting initiatives since 2014, with over 840 hectares established in Kigoma, including 297 hectares in Buhigwe.
“Our goal is to motivate communities to embrace tree farming and address the firewood shortage,” he said.

The initiative was commended by Mr Ismail Ali Ussi, national leader of the 2025 Uhuru Torch Race.
“Alliance One is a key partner of the government in combating environmental degradation and climate change,” he said, urging the Buhigwe District Council, under District Commissioner Colonel Michael Ngayarina, to strengthen collaboration with the firm.
Farm owners Dr Cosmas Buguzi and Mr Elias Ndahaze thanked Alliance One for technical and financial support, noting the project brings hope to a district previously threatened by desertification.
