Sorrow as road carnage claims the lives of four Carmelite Missionary nuns

MWANZA: FOUR nuns from the Congregation of Carmelite Missionary Sisters of Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus have died following a head-on collision between their vehicle and a truck in Mwanza Region.
Among the deceased is the Superior General of the congregation, Sister Nelina Semeoni (60), an Italian national.
According to Mwanza Regional Police Commander Wilbrod Mutafungwa, the fatal accident occurred on the night of September 15, 2025, at 1:50 AM in Bukumbi Village, Idetemya Ward, Misungwi District, along the Usagara–Kigongo Ferry Road.
The nuns were reportedly on their way to Mwanza Airport from the Bukumbi Community in Misungwi District when the accident happened.

In addition to Sister Nelina, those who lost their lives include; Sister Lilian Kapongo (55), her assistant, a Tanzanian from Tabora, Sister Damaris Matheka (51), Head of Bukumbi Girls’ Secondary School, a Kenyan national, Sister Stellamaris Muthin (48), also from Kenya, and their driver, Boniphace Msonola (53).
One survivor, Sister Pauline Mipata (20), who serves as the student supervisor at Bukumbi Girls’ Secondary School, sustained injuries and is currently admitted at Bugando Zonal Referral Hospital in Mwanza for treatment.
