Vodacom rolls out $100m infrastructure upgrade

DAR ES SALAAM: VODACOM Tanzania has launched its largest-ever 100 million US dollars modernisation programme, aiming to boost digital transformation, expand nationwide connectivity and strengthen its infrastructure across the country.

The programme comes as Vodacom Tanzania marks 25 years of serving the nation and part of its Vision 2030.

Vodacom Tanzania Managing Director Philip Besiimire said the modernisation focuses on upgrading network infrastructure, enhancing digital services and expanding connectivity to more communities.

“Our journey to Vision 2030 has officially begun,” said Mr Besiimire adding so far, over 1,000 network sites have been upgraded across the Lake Zone, Southern Highlands and parts of Central zone.

The milestone initiative aims to transform connectivity, enhance service quality and accelerate digital inclusion in both urban and rural areas, supporting national growth for the next 25 years and beyond.

This modernisation includes an upgrade of thousands of network sites across the country and cutting-edge enhancements of the IT infrastructure including the M-Pesa platform.

“With this investment, we’re laying the foundation for the next five years and beyond empowering communities with better access, advancing greener technologies and strengthening trust with our customers, partners and investors,” he said.

These upgrades will deliver faster data speeds, better call quality, more stable M-Pesa services and greater cybersecurity responding directly to the needs of the company’s growing user base, now in the tens of millions.

In line with its Net Zero 2035 ambition, he said the modernisation of Vodacom’s network will result in energy-efficient infrastructure that reduces power consumption by up to 30 per cent while improving network performance and coverage.

“This step reinforces the company’s ESG commitments while ensuring high-quality digital access reaches both urban and remote areas.

Vodacom’s Network Director, Mr Andrew Lupembe said the upgrade involves the latest technology and will significantly expand 4G coverage, ensuring faster internet speeds and improved connectivity.

“We are optimising tower space by introducing multi-band radio technology which accommodates all spectrums in one radio as well as bringing on board multiple frequency bands in the same antennas,” he said.

The telecom is going greener with Huawei’s industry-leading ‘zero-bit-zero  watt’ technology, an innovation that dramatically improves power efficiency while reducing carbon emissions, at the same time improving performance for both 4G and 5G.
