TPA drives cargo growth in DR Congo

DAR ES SALAAM: TANZANIA Ports Authority (TPA) in collaboration with port operators, conducted a marketing campaign in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as part of its strategic plan to increase cargo throughput at the Dar es Salaam Port.
The campaign was aimed at listening to clients and stakeholders and addressing the challenges they face in using the port’s services. Tanzania’s Consul General in Lubumbashi, Magubilo Muroba, representing the Tanzanian Ambassador to DRC, praised the strong cooperation between Tanzanian ports and the DRC businesses.
“I would like to take this opportunity to commend the management of TPA and Dar es Salaam port operators for their excellent cooperation with DRC businesses, which has been instrumental in growing cargo throughput at the port,” he said during the campaign meeting recently.
The marketing team, comprising experts from TPA and the Dar es Salaam port operators DP World and Tanzania East Africa Gateway Terminal Limited (TEAGTL), visited and held discussions with business stakeholders and clients using Dar es Salaam ports in the city of Lubumbashi, Katanga Province.

Mr Muroba said that this collaboration has significantly contributed to year-onyear cargo growth. Recent statistics show a 43 per cent increase in cargo from the DRC, rising from 4.1 million tonnes in 2023/2024 to 5.9 million tonnes in 2024/2025.
Josephat Lukindo, representing TPA’s Director General, thanked DRC business stakeholders for their strong support and called for further strengthening of trade relations.
He added that, among other objectives, the visit aimed to share updates on strategies and major improvements undertaken at the ports of Dar es Salaam, Tanga, Mtwara, and Kigoma to ensure efficient, modern services for clients.
Meanwhile, the operational collaboration between TPA and Dar port operators—DP World and TEAGTL—including investment in modern equipment and major upgrades carried out by the government through TPA, has significantly improved port efficiency, reducing container ship turnaround time to an average of just three days.
Beyond the meeting, the delegation visited Impala Cargo Terminal, one of the largest exporters of copper and sulphur via Dar Port. The company, which ships an average of 350,000 containers annually, expressed satisfaction with services at Tanzanian ports and pledged to continue business cooperation.
The team also visited Conexas Terminal, where management praised TPA and its operators for their efforts and expressed satisfaction with services provided at the ports. The marketing campaign was coordinated by TPA’s DRC office in Lubumbashi, enabling the delegation to hold a key meeting with DRC traders and business stakeholders using Tanzanian ports.
