Gwacha, Khadija shine at Lugalo Combat Fiddle Golf tournament

DAR ES SALAAM: GOLFERS turned out in impressive numbers for the Lugalo Combat Fiddle Tournament, which concluded successfully at the Tanzania People’s Defence Forces (TPDF) Lugalo Golf Club over the weekend.

The 18-hole stroke play event, played under clear skies at the militaryrun Lugalo course, featured fierce competition across five categories: Men’s Division A, B and C, ladies and seniors.

Lugalo Club official Chediel Msechu praised the event’s smooth organisation and the strong participation from players.

“The event went well, and we thank all players who turned up in big numbers to make it a success,” said Msechu.

In Division A, Godfrey Gwadha made a strong return to form after several months off the winner’s list. He carded a gross score of 76 and a nett 69 off a handicap of 7 to secure the top position.

Nicholas Chitanda followed closely, finishing second with a gross of 79 and a nett of 70. Division B saw youthful Rodjey Mwakawago take top honours with a nett score of 70 playing off a handicap 11.

He was trailed by his uncle, Hassan Nkya, who returned a gross score of 86 and a nett of 71. One of the standout performances of the day came from Division C, where J Mwakyusa posted the best nett score of the tournament — a 64 — after shooting a gross of 85 off a 21 handicap. E Mwamboma secured second place with a nett of 76.

The Ladies’ category was dominated by Khadija Selemani, who delivered an outstanding performance with a gross of 78 and a nett of 67.

She was followed by Tanzania Ladies Golf Union (TLGU) vicepresident Ayne Magombe, who impressed with a nett score of 72.

In the Seniors category, veteran golfer Michael Luongo topped the leaderboard with a gross score of 103 and a net of 82 off a 21 handicap.

The tournament marked yet another successful chapter in the Lugalo Golf Club’s calendar, reinforcing its role in promoting competitive golf, unity and sportsmanship both within the military and the wider community.
