Tanzania cruise past Kenya in ICC Women’s T20 Qualifiers

KENYA: THE National Women’s cricket team extended their unbeaten run at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Africa Region Division One Qualifier with a convincing 30-run victory over regional rivals Kenya Women in their second Group B match on Monday.

Despite a stunning five-wicket haul from Kenya’s Melvin Khagoitsa, which earned her the Player of the Match award, Tanzania’s composed performance with both bat and ball ensured they secured a dominant result.

Opting to bat first after winning the toss, Tanzania posted a competitive 125 for 8 in their allot- ted 20 overs.

The innings was anchored by consistent contributions from the top and middle order.

Saum Mtae got the team off to a flying start with a quickfire 30 off just 19 balls, including six boundaries.

She was well supported by Hudaa Omary (24) and Nasra Moha- medi (26), who kept the scoreboard ticking despite Kenya striking at regular intervals.

Khagoitsa was the standout bowler, finishing with remarkable figures of 5 for 13 from her four overs, one of the most impressive spells of the tournament so far.

Her scalps included key batters Mtae, Omary and Shufaa Mohamedi, triggering a lateinnings collapse.

However, Tanzania’s total of 125 proved more than enough, thanks to disciplined bowling and energetic fielding.

In reply, Kenya faltered early and never recovered, eventually being dismissed for 95 in 19.5 overs.

Tanzania’s bowlers made immediate inroads, reducing Kenya to 10 for 3 within the first four overs and maintaining pressure throughout.

With this win, Tanzania tops Group B with four points from two matches, following a thrilling onerun victory over Uganda in their opening fixture.

Uganda sits second on two points, while Rwanda, which lost to Uganda in their second match, are third, also with two points. Kenya remains at the bottom without a win from two games.

Tanzania will now turn their attention to their final group fixture against Rwanda, scheduled for today.

A win would secure top spot in Group B and edge them closer to qualification for the 2026 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Global Qualifier.
