MOI trains 43 specialists in bone and accident treatment techniques

DAR ES SALAAM: A total of 43 specialist doctors from Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe have been trained in new and modern technologies for treating broken bones.

The training, conducted at the AO Alliance Institute in the United States in collaboration with the Muhimbili Orthopedic and Brain Institute (MOI) in Dar es Salaam, involved various specialists and modern techniques in the treatment of broken bones and accident-related injuries.

This was stated by the Coordinator of the training, who is also a Specialist Orthopedic Surgeon from MOI, Dr Joseph Mwanga, who explained that the training is part of a strategy to build the capacity of orthopedic specialists in Africa to ensure that patients receive quality and international-standard services.

“This course aims to build capacity and remind surgeons to use the right methods that respect bone and soft tissue biology, while ensuring the patient recovers quickly and returns to their daily activities,” said Dr. Mwanga.

For his part, one of the international trainers from the United States at the AO Alliance Institute, Dr. Coscia Michael, said the training is unique as it prepares African surgeons to participate in major professional changes in the world.

“We are providing these surgeons with new resources to keep up with global changes in orthopedics… This is an important step in improving health services in Africa and reducing long-term challenges for patients,” said Dr. Michael

And the participants of the training have described how they benefited. Dr. William Mgisha, a surgeon at MOI, said that the training has helped him gain an understanding of surgical techniques that do not cause significant harm to patients.

Another participant, Dr. Kuzivakwesha Mbiriri from Parirenyatwa Hospital in Zimbabwe, said that the training will enable improved care for road accident victims.
