Entrepreneurs encouraged to protect brands

DODOMA: INNOVATORS and entrepreneurs have been tipped to register their trademarks to protect their intellectual property and enhance product value.
At the Nane Nane Agricultural Exhibition in Dodoma, BRELA Registration Officer Ms Julieth Kiwelu noted that many small-scale processors and product developers have yet to register their trademarks, putting their businesses at risk.
“During the exhibition, we saw many innovations without registered trademarks and encourage participants to register their brands,” she said.
Ms Kiwelu explained that registering a trademark offers several benefits, including legal protection against theft or misuse of one’s brand.
“If your business idea is not registered, someone else can easily claim it. Only the registered owner receives legal protection under the law,” she said.
She added that at the BRELA pavilion, a range of services is being offered, including registration of business names, companies, trademarks, service marks, patents industrial licences (Group A) and small industries.
Ms Kiwelu further called upon business owners and farmers from Dodoma and neighbouring regions to visit the pavilion and access these services.

“Although all our services are available online, this is a great opportunity for people to get one-on-one assistance and receive instant registrations,” she said.
She reminded those who have already registered their businesses to ensure they update their details in the system. For businesses registered before the digital system was launched, information must be migrated to the current platform.
“Company owners are also reminded to file their annual returns, which is a mandatory requirement. Business names must also be maintained by paying the annual maintenance fee,” she added.
