Swift govt action boosts port trade efficiency

DAR ES SALAAM: THE government has been commended for swift steps to simplify and modernise the import process, fostering a more efficient and supportive environment for traders.
The CTC-DIGI Ventures, Public Relation Manager at Nico Balinda told ‘Daily News’ recently that that one of their key initiatives has helped reduce cargo clearance time at the Dar es Salaam Port from an average of 10 days in 2018 to just 3 to 5 days last year.
“Improvements at both the port and customs levels have significantly reduced cargo clearance delays, making it easier and faster for businesses to receive goods from abroad,” he said.
Additionally, he said a simplified system allows faster, cheaper clearance, leading to a more predictable supply chain, lower warehousing costs and reduced consumer prices.

When businesses plan better with fewer disruptions, the whole market benefits. He said simplified import processes encourage traders to use legal channels, boosting government revenue and creating a fairer, more competitive market.
“Small and medium enterprises, often hindered by complex systems, stand to gain the most, enabling growth and meaningful contribution to national development,” Mr Balinda said.
