Clergy calls for elected leaders to prioritise national interests

KILIMANJARO: LEADERS who will be elected in this year’s General Election have been urged to be patriotic and ensure that the country’s abundant resources benefit all Tanzanians.

The call was made over the weekend by the Assistant Chief Priest of Christ the King Parish in the Catholic Diocese of Moshi, Father Richard Asenga, during Holy Mass at the Christ the King Cathedral to mark the 18th Sunday of the Year C in the Roman Catholic Church Calendar.

“This is a General Election year, and the processes are already underway. I urge those who will be elected to various positions to avoid selfishness and ensure the country’s resources benefit all Tanzanians,” said Fr Asenga.

He emphasised that Tanzania is blessed with many resources, including natural gas, valuable forests and a variety of minerals, which must be managed responsibly.

“Those vying for leadership positions must work with the government in power to ensure these resources benefit every citizen,” he added.

Fr Asenga warned against selfish leadership, noting that it fosters inequality and weakens nations.

“In countries where leaders entertain selfishness, they use national resources for their own benefit and that of their close associates. This creates discord, as those excluded look for ways — including illegal means — to benefit from what should rightfully be shared,” he cautioned.

He also called on leaders to prioritise serving vulnerable groups.

“Those unable to manage their lives exist in society for a reason. God wants to see how you, as leaders entrusted with power, will serve them to ensure they live decent lives,” he said.

Fr Asenga further appealed to citizens to critically assess candidates before casting their votes.

“Voters must choose leaders who will work with the incoming government to ensure the economy grows for the benefit of all Tanzanians,” he said.

During the Mass, Fr Asenga led a special prayer for peace in Tanzanian families and for the upcoming General Elections to be conducted in harmony, ensuring the country remains peaceful.

His remarks come days after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced the date and procedures for the General Election, set for October 29, 2025.

Tanzanians will elect the President, Members of Parliament and Councillors, while voters in Zanzibar will also elect Members
