TANESCO launches whistleblower portal to curb misconduct

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) has launched a whistleblower portal to receive confidential reports related to infrastructure sabotage, theft of company assets, corruption and Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in the workplace.

Speaking during the launch, TANESCO’s Acting Director of Communication and Customer Services, Ms Irene Gowelle, said the portal is now active and accessible to the public, employees and customers.

“It is intended to make it easier for people to report misconduct and protect the integrity of the company’s operations,” she said.

According to Ms Gowelle, TANESCO has long faced challenges involving vandalism, theft and unethical behaviour that undermine the delivery of reliable electricity services.

“The portal is designed to allow the public and TANESCO stakeholders to report acts such as damage to electrical infrastructure, internal theft, bribery and sexual harassment without revealing their identity,” she explained.

She said the platform will help build a culture of responsibility and provide people with a safe space to share critical information without fear of retaliation. Information can be submitted in three ways: Through TANESCO’s website by filling out a secure online form, by calling the toll-free number 180 and pressing 2 to speak to a trained service provider, or by sending a short message to 0748 550 000.

On the safety of whistleblowers, Ms Gowelle assured that the system will keep all information confidential and that employees managing the reports have signed formal agreements to protect whistleblower identities.

“Only those responsible for overseeing the portal will have access to the reports, which ensures that no unauthorised individuals can trace who submitted the information,” she stressed

Ms Gowelle noted that this development follows TANESCO’s recent campaign, “Lipa Deni, Linda Miundombinu Tukuhudumie,” which encourages customers to settle outstanding debts and protect the company’s infrastructure.

She said the new system strengthens that campaign by going beyond education and offering a practical, long-term solution for gathering information from the public.

Addressing GBV issues within the company, Ms Gowelle acknowledged that some harassment cases have been reported but noted that many individuals are uncomfortable speaking openly about them.

“The portal will now serve as a safe way for employees to raise such concerns,” she said.

Ms Gowelle further urged customers with longstanding debts to continue working with TANESCO officers on payment agreements.

“Many people across the country have already responded positively and the company welcomes others to visit its offices to find flexible solutions,” she added.

The new whistleblower system is expected to benefit the public, customers and employees by preventing crime, promoting accountability and improving service delivery.

“All information received will be used for its intended purpose in line with TANESCO’s mission to safeguard national resources and improve service delivery,” Ms Gowelle affirmed.
