Invest in football to boost Africa’s economy – Motsepe

DAR ES SALAAM: CAF President Patrice Motsepe has called on stakeholders to invest in football, underscoring its ability to create jobs, drive tourism, attract investment opportunities and change the lives of youths.

He made these remarks shortly after arriving in Dar es Salaam on Saturday, just before the kick-off of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

Motsepe articulated that football is not merely a sport; it is a crucial driver of economic growth and social upliftment.

“We are not just about football; we are about uplifting our people, growing our economies and changing lives,” he stated. “The success of our young players inspires millions.

It creates jobs, drives tourism and attracts investment,” Motsepe explained, noting how success on the field ripples out into various sectors of the economy.

He highlighted the substantial financial impact football can generate, referring specifically to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as a significant example.

The recent tournament held in Ivory Coast reportedly generated US 1.5 billion dollars in economic benefits for the Ivorian economy. The CAF President also addressed the financial challenges faced by players due to the often short duration of their careers in football.

He urged players to focus on long-term financial security, advising them, “We want every player to earn, save, and invest so they can look after themselves and their families long after their playing days are over.” Furthermore, Motsepe praised Tanzania’s growing prominence in African football, recognising it as one of the continent’s fastest-emerging football nations.

“There are 54 African countries, and they are all focusing on Tanzania because it is one of our fastest-growing football nations in terms of quality,” he noted.

“We are seeing more fans at stadiums, more joy in watching highquality football and steady improvements in infrastructure.”
