Mkapa Hospital to establish town clinic

DODOMA: BENJAMIN Mkapa Hospital is planning to establish a Town Clinic aimed at bringing services closer to residents in the heart of Dodoma City.

Speaking in Dodoma recently, the hospital’s Executive Director, Professor Abel Makubi, said the new clinic will ease the burden for residents who currently have to travel to the main hospital for medical services.

“As you know, Benjamin Mkapa Hospital is located slightly outside the city. With a town clinic in the city centre we’ll bring services closer to people who don’t necessarily need to come all the way to the main hospital,” he said.

Prof Makubi added that the hospital currently offers around 20 specialist services, of which 17 are super specialised. “We are now attending to an average of 1,200 patients per day, up from 900 previously.

This increase is a result of major ongoing improvements. We thank the President (Samia Suluhu Hassan) for this substantial investment, which has made it all possible.” For the 2024/25 fiscal year, the hospital has seen significant transformations, including the introduction of new super-specialised services.

He highlighted innovations such as laparoscopic kidney removal surgery, where a donor’s kidney is removed using minimally invasive procedures, unlike in the past, when open surgery was the only option.

“This is a huge step forward in modernising our services,” he insisted.

The hospital has also performed bone marrow transplants between patients and donors with incompatible blood types, something previously not possible unless the donor and recipient had matching blood types.

“We’ve also successfully conducted brain surgeries, urinary system procedures and modern heart and eye surgeries—aligned with our vision of providing high-tech healthcare services.” These advancements have positioned Benjamin Mkapa Hospital as a toptier health institution within regional hospitals.

Recently, the hospital launched an international and VIP outpatient clinic offering comprehensive health screening services. Prof Makubi said the new clinic will serve up to 100 patients per day, with world-class standards and added benefits such as short wait times.
