Boxing Federation pushes for WBA affiliation

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Tanzania Boxing Federation (BFT) plans to affiliate with the World Boxing Association (WBA).
BFT Secretary-General Makare Mashaga shared that the federation has made strides toward meeting the WBA’s membership criteria.
A major accomplishment has been the revision of the BFT’s constitution to align with WBA standards.
“The process is nearing completion. We have completed most of the required documentation, including updates to our constitution. The final step is to secure official endorsements from the National Sports Council and the Tanzania Olympic Committee (TOC),” Mashaga explained.
He stressed the critical nature of becoming a WBA member, pointing out that without this affiliation, Tanzanian boxers would be ineligible for significant international competitions.
Mashaga further mentioned that the federation is diligently preparing the necessary documents for review by the BMT and TOC, with the goal of submitting the final application to the WBA by the end of the week.

“We are optimistic about receiving a favorable response, especially as the WBA continues to grow its global membership base,” he added.
Currently, BFT holds membership with the International Boxing Association (IBA), but is pursuing WBA membership to enhance global opportunities for its athletes.
Many countries maintain dual affiliations with both IBA and WBA to ensure their boxers can compete in vital global events.
He concluded by stressing the importance of securing WBA membership, stating, “Failure to achieve this would greatly restrict opportunities for Tanzanian boxers. This is a critical moment for the sport. Without WBA membership, we risk being left behind while the world progresses. Our athletes deserve the opportunity to compete and succeed on the biggest stages.”
