TACTIC projects to transform Kagera

KAGERA: KAGERA Regional Commissioner (RC) Fatma Mwassa has expressed gratitude to the World Bank (WB) for funding major infrastructure projects aimed at modernising 15 municipalities and cities across Tanzania under the Tanzania Cities Transforming Infrastructure and Competitiveness (TACTIC) programme.

Speaking during the official handing over of project sites to contractors in Bukoba Municipality on Wednesday, Ms Mwassa said the implementation of the projects was a milestone that would significantly transform the region’s economy and improve the quality of life for its residents.

“The implementation of this 410- million US dollars project to modernise 15 municipalities and cities in Tanzania is a milestone because the region’s economy will be transformed,” she said, urging residents to seize the opportunities created by the development, including investing in modern hospitality facilities.

She also directed contractors to ensure that the works are completed on time and deliver value for money.

In Bukoba, the contractors are Dimetoclasa Real Hope Ltd, tasked with constructing a modern market complex and a bus terminal at Kyakailabwa area, and Shondong Luquio Group Co. Ltd, which will upgrade a 10.7km road network and install 426 solar-powered street lights.

Approximately 40.2bn/- has been allocated for Bukoba’s TACTIC projects. These include the construction of a modern market complex, a new bus terminal at Kyakailabwa, the conservation of River Kanoni over a stretch of 7.2 kilometres, upgrading of the road network and the installation of solar street lights.

Bukoba Urban legislator Stephen Byabato reassured traders who previously operated at the old market and bus stand currently under renovation that they will be given priority in the allocation of spaces in the new facilities.

“This project will provide a significant facelift to our town, and traders who previously had stalls at the old market will be given priority during the allocation process,” he said.

The TACTIC programme is being implemented in three phases, referred to as “tillers.” Municipalities under Tiller 1 include Arusha, Geita, Dodoma, Ilemela, Kahama, Kigoma, Mbeya, Morogoro, Mwanza, Songea, Sumbawanga and Tabora.

Tiller 2 covers Babati, Bariadi, Bukoba, Iringa, Kibaha, Korogwe, Lindi, Moshi, Mpanda, Mtwara, Musoma, Njombe, Singida, Shinyanga and Tanga, while Tiller 3 involves Bagamoyo, Bunda, Chato, Handeni, Ifakara, Kasulu, Kondoa, Mafinga, Makambako, Masasi, Mbingwa, Mbulu, Nanyamba, Newala, Nzega, Tarime, Tunduma and Vwawa.

On December 16, 2023, Minister of State in the President’s Office (Regional Administration and Local Government), Mr Mohamed Mchengerwa, witnessed the signing of contracts for the 410-million US dollars programme in Bukoba Municipality.
