Tanzanian specialists operate on 57 patients in Gitega, head to Bujumbura

BUJUMBURA: THE Chief Executive Officer of Benjamin Mkapa Hospital (BMH), Prof. Abel Makubi, has led a team of specialists from the hospital to provide medical services to the people of Burundi in an ongoing medical outreach camp in Bujumbura Province.

Speaking to reporters, Prof. Makubi stated that this marks the eighth day since the team began offering services in Burundi, initially starting in Gitega Province before moving to Bujumbura.

“We’ve seen an overwhelming response from the public. My fellow doctors and I are ready to serve all patients, even late into the night,” said Prof. Makubi.

He also reported that all patients who underwent surgery in Gitega are recovering well.

“As you may recall, we performed surgeries on 57 patients in Gitega. All of them are doing well now, and most have already been discharged to resume their daily activities,” he added.

These services are part of Benjamin Mkapa Hospital’s broader efforts to strengthen its position in the medical tourism sector within the East African region. According to Prof. Makubi, the hospital aims to provide internationally recognized healthcare services not only to Tanzanians but also to neighboring countries.

Benjamin Mkapa Hospital has been actively promoting regional healthcare cooperation by extending high-quality medical services beyond Tanzania’s borders. This initiative supports the country’s health diplomacy strategy and enhances Tanzania’s reputation in the global healthcare arena.
