Chato teacher fatally attacked, four arrested
GEITA: A TEACHER from Magufuli High School in Chato District, Mr Cathbert Julius (42), has been attacked and killed while riding in a three-wheel cargo tricycle he was using to transport pigs.
Geita Regional Police Commander, Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police (SACP) Safia Jongo, confirmed the incident in a press statement issued to the media on Tuesday.
According to the police report, Mr Cathbert Julius was last seen on July 5, 2025, at around 8:00 pm at Mkongolo area near Kidongo Chekundu, while operating a Sinoray tricycle with registration number MC 337DLG.
He was reportedly transporting four pigs to Geita Town when the cargo tricycle developed a mechanical problem. It was at that moment when he was attacked by a group of criminals who inflicted severe injuries.
“On July 6, 2025, at around 11:00 am, the body was found by the roadside at Kidongo Chekundu area, bearing injuries on various parts of the body,” the police statement read.
The report confirmed that four suspects have been arrested in connection with the murder, adding that the tricycle and the animals that were being transported were recovered.
The suspects are Nyarukamo Mugasa (42), a businessman, Aron Elias (35) who is a farmer, Octavius Silvery (25), a bajaji driver; and Bukeye Joseph (17), a bajaji assistant driver, all residents of Geita Municipal Council, the report said.
The police further said that investigation is in progress and the suspects will be taken to court once the investigation is completed.
The Headmaster of Magufuli High School, Mr Abdullah Hamis, speaking to journalists, said the deceased was an academic teacher and was buried on July 9, 2025, in Bukoba District, Kagera Region.
He said that the late teacher had worked at the school for 13 years since his official employment in 2012 and had no clear history of social or political conflicts.
He said that his horrific death sent shockwaves through the entire community.

He added that during his lifetime, the deceased was a pig farmer and businessman who had operated for a long time. He has so far left behind a wife and five children.
