Bayport plants 600 trees at Mloganzila and nearby schools

Dar es Salaam: Bayport Tanzania has planted 600 trees at four public institutions, including the Muhimbili National Hospital’s Mloganzila branch.
In addition to the hospital, the financial institution also planted trees at Mloganzila A and B Primary Schools, as well as Mloganzila Secondary School.
This initiative aligns with Bayport’s Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategy, which aims to support a cleaner and greener future for Tanzania.
At the Muhimbili Mloganzila Hospital, 300 shade trees were planted to provide a fresh-air environment for patients visiting the referral hospital. Meanwhile, Mloganzila Primary and Secondary Schools — which together serve over 1,000 pupils and students — received 300 fruit trees, including mango trees.
Bayport’s Chief Operating Officer, Nderingo Materu, emphasized the company’s focus on sustainability during the event:
“In 2019, we transitioned our loan origination process from paper-based to digital, significantly reducing paper usage and waste. As part of our commitment to a sustainable future, Bayport has pledged to plant 1,000,000 trees across Tanzania. Planting 600 trees in Mloganzila today is another step forward in achieving this goal,” Materu said.

Speaking during the event, Mloganzila Referral Hospital Deputy Managing Director, Dr Julieth Magand, praised Bayport’s efforts:
“We appreciate Bayport’s dedication to global environmental initiatives. Planting trees is not just about the act itself — it’s about ensuring they thrive, providing shelter, preventing environmental degradation, and supporting the local ecosystem,” she noted.
Dr. Magand also extended gratitude to Bayport Financial Services for donating, organizing, and coordinating the planting exercise:
“I extend my heartfelt thanks to Bayport Financial Services for organizing this tree planting exercise and for choosing Mloganzila Referral Hospital as a preferred site. We all understand that trees convert carbon dioxide and water into oxygen. In addition, they are a source of rainfall and food, including fruits. When properly cared for, the trees we’ve planted here will greatly benefit both current and future generations.”
Baraka Joseph, a Standard Six pupil at Mloganzila A Primary School, also expressed appreciation:
“There are many public schools around us, but you chose our school for this exercise. This clearly shows the love you have for our school. We, the students, promise to take care of these trees as a sign of appreciation.”
He further added that Mloganzila A Primary School already had several trees, but most were for shade:
“We’re happy that Bayport has now provided fruit trees, which will not only offer shade but also improve our nutrition.”
