Tanzania sees a new dawn at Global Giga connectivity

GENEVA,SWITZERLAND: TANZANIA has participated in the Global Giga Connectivity Forum, which aims to discuss strategies to enhance teaching and learning environments through the use of ICT.

The three-day forum, which began on July 8, will climax on July 10, 2025, in Geneva, Switzerland, and has the key goals of ensuring that by the year 2030, all schools worldwide have access to the internet.

Among the many participants at the event is Tanzania’s Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology, responsible for Higher Education, Science, and Technology, Prof Daniel Mushi.

The second Giga Connectivity Forum, organized by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in collaboration with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), is being attended by participants from various countries, including representatives from governments, the private sector, international organizations, and civil society groups.

The forum is Giga’s flagship event, bringing together key government representatives in digital infrastructure and education with experts and partners from international financial institutions, UN agencies, and members of the local Swiss ecosystem.

Giga, the ITU-UNICEF initiative supporting governments to connect every school to the Internet by 2030, officially inaugurated its Giga Connectivity Centre on June 25 this year.

According to information from the Giga global website, connecting schools allows children to develop digital skills and access online learning content, where schools can also become anchor points for surrounding communities.

“If you can connect the school, you can also connect local businesses and services.  This creates opportunities for service providers to generate revenue from paying users, making connectivity more sustainable,” the website reads.
