DESMI reinforces commitment to sustainability, local talent in Tanzania

DAR ES SALAAM :  DESMI Africa, a subsidiary of the global oil spill response equipment manufacturer DESMI Ro-Clean based in Odense, Denmark, has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable development, local talent empowerment, and improved service delivery in Tanzania, as part of its broader Africa expansion strategy.

With more than a decade of operations in Tanzania, DESMI has established the country as its Africa Headquarters, overseeing activities across more than 20 Sub-Saharan nations. A new subsidiary was recently opened in Nigeria to further boost the company’s regional reach.

“Our presence in Tanzania is strategic. It brings us closer to our customers, allowing for faster response to market needs while advancing industrial and environmental progress across the region,” said Mr Andrews, a senior executive from DESMI Africa.

Located in Dar es Salaam, the Tanzania office serves as a key hub for a wide range of industries, including marine and offshore, oil and gas, pipeline operators, and ports and harbours. The office is equipped with a skilled technical team, service support personnel, and a reliable supply of spare parts, enabling prompt, hands-on customer service that reduces operational downtime.

A central pillar of DESMI Africa’s strategy is the investment in local human capital. The company has introduced localized training initiatives to upskill engineers, technicians, and service teams — a move aimed at building sustainable expertise in the region.

“We believe that sustainable development goes hand-in-hand with knowledge transfer and skills training,” Mr. Andrews added. “Our investment in Tanzania is not just about infrastructure , it’s about people. We are committed to empowering local teams to deliver world-class service and drive meaningful regional growth.”

He further cited Tanzania’s favourable investment climate as a key factor behind DESMI’s decision to establish its long-term presence.

“We conducted thorough due diligence before investing here. Tanzania offers a well-developed port, strong infrastructure, an education system capable of producing skilled technical talent, and above all, political stability and personal security. That’s why we’ve been here for over 10 years,” he said.

Speaking at the company’s offices in Dar es Salaam, DESMI Africa’s Operations Manager, Mr Philbertus Mujuni, addressed concerns over the environmental dangers of oil spills in water bodies.

“When oil is spilled in the sea, rivers or lakes, the impact is devastating. It disrupts aquatic ecosystems — killing plants and displacing animals — and can permanently damage the natural environment,” he said.

“To prevent such disasters, proper equipment is essential. That’s why DESMI continues to innovate and provide cutting-edge technologies aimed at containing and preventing oil spills before they cause irreversible harm.”

DESMI’s expansion across Africa is being fuelled by growing demand for resilient and energy-efficient environmental protection systems. From flood control and wastewater treatment to marine oil spill response and industrial fluid handling, the company is actively supporting infrastructure and sustainability initiatives across the continent.

In Tanzania, DESMI’s strong local presence also provides opportunities for collaboration with government institutions, NGOs and private sector stakeholders on environmental protection and water management projects.

The company’s mission — delivering clean solutions for a better world — remains at the heart of its Africa strategy, as it seeks to combine technological innovation with community-driven development.
