SADC hails Samia for championing Clean Energy Campaign

HARARE, ZIMBABWE: TANZANIAN President Samia Suluhu Hassan, has been recognized as the number one leader in Africa in promoting the use of clean cooking energy. The recognition was made by Ministers responsible for Energy and Water from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) during a regional meeting taking place in Harare, Zimbabwe.

The commendation came from leaders and experts representing eight SADC member states, who convened to discuss ways to strengthen regional cooperation in the energy and water sectors and to strategize on sustainable development goals.

Speaking at the meeting, Tanzania’s Deputy Minister for Energy, Judith Kapinga, stated that the Tanzanian government continues to create a supportive environment for the adoption of clean cooking energy by educating the public and raising awareness about its benefits. She noted that these efforts align with the objectives of Tanzania’s National Clean Cooking Energy Strategy (2024–2034).

Kapinga emphasized the importance of a united commitment from the SADC community and called for robust implementation strategies to advance the clean cooking agenda across the region.

She also urged innovation in rolling out this agenda, including the use of alternative fuels such as environmentally friendly briquettes, to reduce reliance on traditional charcoal and encourage broader adoption of clean energy.
