One more perishes as Same road carnage claims 39 deaths

SAME: THE number of people who have died following a tragic head-on collision in Same District, Kilimanjaro Region, has reached 39, while most of those who suffered injuries have now been discharged.

The tragic accident occurred on June 28, 2025, at Sabasaba area in Same District. It involved a Chanel One Company bus traveling from Moshi to Tanga and a Coaster minibus heading to Moshi from Same.

 The two vehicles collided head-on and subsequently caught fire while passengers were still inside.

Speaking today, June 30, 2025, Kilimanjaro Regional Commissioner Nurdin Babu confirmed that the death toll has increased from the initially reported 38 to 39, following the death of one of the injured persons who had been undergoing treatment.

Regarding the injured, the Regional Commissioner noted that out of the 28 people who were hospitalized, 22 have since been discharged after their conditions improved, while six remain under medical care.

He also stated that 33 of the bodies, which were severely burnt and unidentifiable, have been sent to the Government Chemist for DNA analysis to help identify them and return them to their families for burial arrangements. So far, five bodies have been identified by relatives.

Authorities continue to urge road users to exercise caution, as investigations into the exact cause of the accident are still ongoing.
