Mining revenue hits record 1.063tri/-, surpasses target

DODOMA: TANZANIA mining sector has set a new record by generating a total of 1.063tri/- with just one day remaining before the close of the 2024/25 financial year.
Key factors behind this success include improvements in the business environment, sector reforms and strong collaboration between the Ministry of Minerals and its stakeholders.
These combined efforts enabled the sector to surpass its revenue target of 1tri/-.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Minerals, Engineer Yahya Samamba, disclosed this achievement over the weekend in Dodoma, while concluding the Ministry’s Bonanza event, which gathered ministry staff and affiliated institutions for sports activities including football, netball and athletics.
“We have collected over 1tri/- without opening a single new mine. In previous years, we didn’t even come close to 900bn/-, but this year we have surpassed that with an average of 84bn/- per month,” Eng Samamba said.
He congratulated all staff under the ministry and its institutions, saying that the success was a collective effort to meet set targets.
He called for continued unity and professionalism to ensure the sector continues delivering economic benefits to the nation.
“Whether you’re at GST (Geological Survey of Tanzania), TEITI (Tanzania Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative), Mining Commission, TGC (Tanzania Gemmological Centre), or the Ministry headquarters see yourself as part of this success story,” he added.

Eng Samamba also praised the government’s recent decision, implemented through the Bank of Tanzania (BoT) to start purchasing gold for national reserves.
He described this move as a significant shift from the past, when mining activities took place without building up national reserves. He announced that the ministry’s target for the 2025/26 financial year is to collect 1.2tri/-.
He urged staff to work harder to achieve this goal, highlighting the sector’s important role in boosting domestic revenue.
Eng Samamba also revealed plans to visit all institutions under the ministry to engage with staff, listen to their challenges and find solutions.
Meanwhile, he instructed the Director of Administration and Human Resources to establish a system to organise at least four bonanzas each year to strengthen unity and solidarity among ministry staff and affiliated institutions.
On her part, Chairperson of the Mining Commission, Dr Janeth Lekashingo, encouraged staff to foster strong relationships and communication, saying that regular physical activity contributes significantly to workplace wellbeing.
Similarly, the Commission’s Executive Secretary, Engineer Ramadhan Lwamo, said good health boosts productivity and urged employees to maintain an active lifestyle.
