860m/- emergency water project nears completion in Mwanza

MWANZA: AN emergency water project involving the installation of a 12-inch pipeline extending 4.5 kilometres from the Sahwa water tank in Lwanhima Ward to Buhongwa area, valued at 860 million shillings, is nearing completion.

During an inspection of the project’s progress, Acting Executive Director of Mwanza Urban Water Supply and Sanitation Authority (MWAUWASA), Ms Neli Msuya, stated that the project’s completion will significantly enhance water services in Lwanhima and Buhongwa areas, including Sahwa, Buhongwa East and neighbouring areas within Mwanza City Council.

“There are three water outlets in Lwanhima ward that will benefit various neighbourhoods, including Buhongwa East, Buhongwa Central, Bulale, and Kigoto,” she said, noting that improvements in water services are progressing well.

Ms Msuya explained that the remaining work involves connecting the new pipeline with the existing water distribution lines.

She expressed gratitude to the government for its guidance and support for shortterm projects, praising President Samia Suluhu Hassan for providing the funds and Minister for Water Mr Jumaa Aweso for supervising water projects in Mwanza City.

“This project is 100 percent funded by the central government and we are deeply appreciative to President Samia and the Minister of Water for their efforts to ensure its timely completion,” said Ms Msuya.

Meanwhile, Engineer David Katakweba, Assistant Head of the Nyegezi Zone at MWAUWASA, reported that the project’s implementation has reached 85 per cent. He noted that the remaining work involves connecting and covering pipes over a 100-metre stretch, which is expected to be finished by September, allowing residents to benefit from the new infrastructure.

Councilors from Buhongwa, Lwanhima and Mkolani wards, which are set to benefit from the project, expressed their gratitude and optimism, highlighting the significant improvements anticipated in water services once the project is complete.

The completion of this project is expected to substantially increase water supply to the residents of Buhongwa, Lwanhima and Mkolani wards, alleviating the water shortages that have previously affected these areas.
