DAR ES SALAAM: As the curtains fall on 2024, a year marked by triumphs and trials, one tragedy stands out as a wound that may never fully heal.

The Promise of a Brighter Future Cut Short

Dr. Ndugulile’s life was one of service. A medical doctor by profession, he rose to prominence as an MP for Kigamboni Constituency, before assuming national leadership roles, including Deputy Minister for Communication and ICT and Deputy Minister for Health.

His expertise and dedication led to his election in August 2024 as the WHO Regional Director for Africa.

During his campaign for the position, Dr. Ndugulile articulated a bold vision: ensuring access to quality healthcare across Africa, enhancing epidemic preparedness, and fostering accountability within the WHO’s regional systems.

He secured 25 out of 46 votes, defeating candidates from Senegal and Niger, cementing his reputation as a visionary leader ready to transform healthcare systems on the continent.

However, his dreams of assuming office in February 2025 were tragically cut short. While undergoing treatment in India, Dr. Ndugulile passed away, leaving the nation and the world grappling with the loss of a leader who had so much yet to accomplish.

A Nation United in Grief

The announcement of his death by Speaker of the National Assembly, Dr. Tulia Ackson, on November 27 sent shockwaves through the nation.

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Faustine Ndugulile,” Dr. Tulia shared in her statement. “On behalf of Parliament, I extend heartfelt condolences to his family, the people of Kigamboni, and all Tanzanians. This is a loss not only for our country but for Africa as a whole.”

The Final Journey

On November 29, 2024, Tanzania was engulfed in a somber mood as a plane carrying Dr. Ndugulile’s body touched down at Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA) in Dar es Salaam. Led by Deputy Speaker Mussa Zungu, top government officials, family members, and mourners received the body.

After arrival, the motorcade escorted his remains to Lugalo Military Hospital for preservation, where preparations for public and state tributes began.

A Nation Pays Its Respects

The farewell began on December 2, 2024, with a requiem mass at St. Immaculate Church, Upanga, in Dar es Salaam.

After the session, the body was taken to Karimjee Grounds, where President Samia Suluhu Hassan led mourners in paying their last respects to the fallen health hero.

Speaking during the ceremony, President Samia described him as “a bold and visionary leader who was dedicated to improving the healthcare system not only in Tanzania but across the African continent.”

The next day, on December 3, 2024, a heavy cloud of grief hung over Mwongozo Cemetery in Kigamboni, Dar es Salaam, as the casket bearing the body of Dr. Faustine Ndugulile was lowered into his final resting place.

Hundreds of mourners from across the country and beyond gathered to bid farewell, led by Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa.

Other prominent figures, including Speaker of the National Assembly Dr. Tulia Ackson, members of parliament, and a representative from WHO, joined in honoring the life of a man many called a visionary leader.

Earlier in the day, Health Minister Jenista Mhagama guided mourners, including Kigamboni residents, in paying their final respects at Tungi Grounds. Heartfelt tributes were shared, recounting Dr. Ndugulile’s courage, vision, and dedication to public health and his constituency.

“Dr. Ndugulile was a bold and highly respected leader who inspired many with his unwavering commitment to serving others,” said one speaker, their voice heavy with emotion.

Filling the Void

The loss of Dr. Ndugulile left Tanzania and the WHO searching for a successor. On December 10, 2024, President Samia Suluhu Hassan announced Prof. Mohammed Janabi, Executive Director of Muhimbili National Hospital, as Tanzania’s nominee to vie for the position of WHO Regional Director.

“After reviewing several candidates, we concluded that Prof. Janabi is well-suited for this role,” President Samia announced during an oath-taking ceremony in Zanzibar.

A Legacy to Cherish

Dr. Faustine Ndugulile is survived by his wife and two children. His passing is a reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of visionary leadership. His contributions to public health, both locally and internationally, will serve as a guiding light for future generations.

As 2024 comes to an end, Tanzania mourns not just the loss of a leader but also the dreams and aspirations he carried for the nation and the continent. Dr. Ndugulile’s memory remains a testament to the power of dedication, compassion, and hope in building a better future for all.
