GEITA: AT least 15 people including four children, narrowly escaped death in Geita Town after being rescued from drowning following heavy rains on November 5, 2024.
The downpour, which lasted for approximately four hours, led to widespread flooding in low-lying areas.
The Fire and Rescue Unit Commander in Geita Region, Mr Shabaan Dawa, confirmed the incident. He told the Daily News that the majority of those affected were residents of areas prone to flooding.
In Mbugani Street, five people were rescued. At the Geita Bus Stand, three children and two women were saved, while in Geita Market Street (also known as Mbagala), four people were rescued.
“In Uwanja street, Nyankumbu ward, one child and a woman were overwhelmed by the rising waters but were also rescued,” he said.
He further reported that in Jimboni Street, two families lost their homes to the flooding, but they were provided temporary shelter by neighbours.
The Commander also clarified that there were no fatalities, with all rescued individuals safe. However, two people were found in poor condition and were taken to the hospital for treatment.
The rescue operation, which was largely successful, involved both rescue boats and fire and rescue personnel who swam to reach and save survivors.
Commander Dawa urged residents, especially those in low-lying areas, to take precautions during the rainy season to avoid similar disasters in the future. He advised them to evacuate flood-prone areas when necessary.

“The infrastructure in the area remains intact, with no significant damage. For example, the bridges are in good condition and the entire town of Geita remains accessible, with no roads closed,” he added.
