Std VI pupil dies in tragic sand pit accident

SHINYANGA: A Standard Six pupil at Bukindwasali Primary School, Kassim Omary (12), has died after allegedly being struck on the head by a hoe wielded by a fellow pupil at Idahina Ward, Dakama Division, Ushetu District, in Shinyanga Region.
The incident occurred while the pupils were taking part in collecting sand for the renovation of a classroom at the school.
Shinyanga Regional Police Commander, Janeth Magomi, has confirmed the incident, which took place on January 21, 2026, stating that the pupil died while receiving treatment at Nyankende Dispensary.

According to Commander Magomi, during the activity Kassim was inside a pit, while his fellow pupil, identified as James, was digging sand from the upper area. It is alleged that the hoe James was using slipped and struck Kassim on the head.
She said a thorough investigation is ongoing to establish the facts surrounding the incident, and appropriate legal action will be taken upon completion of the investigation.
Meanwhile, Commander Magomi has urged teachers and school administrators in Shinyanga Region to closely supervise pupils when they are engaged in manual work at school, in order to prevent avoidable accidents and tragedies.
