Five Z’bar students to compete in NASA Oman challenge

ZANZIBAR: The Secretary-General of the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training in Zanzibar, Khamis Abdalla Said, has affirmed that the government will continue to support efforts to prepare more young people in Zanzibar to become experts in space science education.
Khamis made the remarks while seeing off five Zanzibar students from the Karume Institute of Science and Technology as they departed Zanzibar for Muscat, Oman, to participate in the NASA International Space Apps Challenge 2025, which will be held in the city of Ibra.
He stated that the selection of these five students is a result of improvements and strengthening of the education sector, with a particular focus on science and technology, aimed at preparing more specialists in this field.
Speaking at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport in Zanzibar ahead of their departure, the students explained that this opportunity arose from the exceptional skills they demonstrated during their participation in the International Astronomical Search Collaboration (IASC) programme, a global initiative focused on asteroid discovery in partnership with NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) of the United States.
Furthermore, they pledged that their journey will provide a valuable opportunity to explore important issues in the field of space science and to bring innovative ideas back home.
A few weeks ago, these five students had the honour of meeting the President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi, at the State House in Zanzibar.
