CHRGG urges responsible election reporting

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Commission for Human Rights and Good Governance (CHRGG) has urged journalists to exercise caution and integrity across all media platforms to promote peace and safeguard the nation’s democratic future as election approach.
The call was made yesterday by CHRGG Chairperson, Retired Judge Mathew Mwaimu, while officiating at a training workshop for journalists on the observance of human rights and the principles of good governance in the electoral process.
“In this election period, journalists have a responsibility to report all electoral events accurately and impartially, without favouring any party, candidate, or political ideology. Balanced coverage must be given to all participating political parties,” said Retired Judge Mwaimu.
He further urged journalists to uphold responsible digital and editorial practices to prevent misinformation, avoid publishing false statements about candidates or political parties and ensure ethical standards are maintained in all media content.
Retired Judge Mwaimu also cautioned media professionals against publishing or broadcasting content that incites violence or promotes political, ethnic, religious, or gender-based hatred and discrimination.
He noted that the training was designed to enable journalists to perform their duties within the framework of established laws and regulations, thereby avoiding potential conflicts between media personnel and law enforcement agencies during the election period.
“This training will also enhance journalists’ understanding of their rights and responsibilities during the electoral period, which is key to ensuring media freedom and press independence,” he added.
