Mwinyi promises more loans for traders

ZANZIBAR: CHAMA Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) Zanzibar presidential candidate, Dr Hussein Mwinyi, has pledged to expand access to interest-free loans for entrepreneurs and traders who have successfully repaid previous loans.
Addressing business people at the Kibanda Maiti Market grounds in the Urban West Region during his campaign rallies ahead of the upcoming General Election later this month, Dr Mwinyi stated that, if re-elected, his government would intensify support for traders and small-scale entrepreneurs.
He assured the public that the government had completed the design and secured sufficient funding for the construction of a modern market at Kibanda Maiti, with construction set to commence shortly.
The President emphasised that his administration would prioritise the provision and expansion of interest-free loans, particularly for individuals who have shown commitment in repaying previous facilities.
Dr Mwinyi urged Zanzibaris to continue placing their trust in the ruling CCM party by voting for him and all CCM candidates across different levels, to ensure effective implementation of the party’s development agenda.
He also encouraged citizens to turn out in large numbers on polling day, stressing that a strong mandate would empower CCM to continue driving Zanzibar’s growth.
While visiting Malindi Market in Stone Town, Dr Mwinyi engaged directly with entrepreneurs and fish vendors, reaffirming his commitment to improving business conditions and enhancing the fisheries and entrepreneurship sectors. “I am very happy to be here with you,” he said.
“I ask for your votes – for me, for President Samia Suluhu Hassan and for all CCM candidates. The promises I made in 2020 have been fulfilled and now I seek another five years so that we can deliver even greater progress.”
Dr Mwinyi highlighted that his administration had already achieved several milestones, including the distribution of interest-free loans, fishing boats and seaweed farming equipment to support local fishers and farmers.
He described these initiatives as part of a broader strategy to improve livelihoods and build a sustainable blue economy.

The President added that the government is continuing with the construction of markets and fish landing sites across Unguja and Pemba to ensure that traders operate in clean, well-organised environments.
“We promised better business conditions and we are delivering,” he said.
“Fishers will receive the support they need to access deep-sea fishing grounds and entrepreneurs will have clean, modern spaces to operate their businesses.”
Dr Mwinyi reminded the public that over the past five years, the government had allocated TZS 96 billion to support small-scale traders and entrepreneurs, although he acknowledged that not all had yet benefited. He pledged to expand access and ensure more inclusive support.
“There is no reason for our markets to lack hygiene or proper management. With increased funding, we will build modern markets and improve working conditions,” he added, directing the Zanzibar Fisheries Corporation (ZAFICO) to ensure cleanliness is maintained across all fish markets.
