Airtel, partners to transform Z’bar digital learning

ZANZIBAR: AIRTEL Tanzania has team up with partners to launch a digital learning initiative in Zanzibar, removing data barriers, training teachers and promoting digital literacy to build a skilled workforce and support inclusive economic growth.
The Director of Secondary Education in Zanzibar, Asia Iddy Issa, said at the weekend that the Airtel SmartWasomi programme enhances human capital, drives innovation and supports the isle’s transition to a knowledge-based economy, reducing inequality and promoting inclusive growth.
“This initiative supports our vision of building a digitally literate generation by overcoming access barriers in underserved regions. By training teachers and eliminating data costs, we bridge traditional and modern education while fostering a skilled workforce to drive innovation and economic growth,” she said.

She made the remarks during a training workshop for 36 secondary school teachers in Zanzibar, organised by Airtel Tanzania through Airtel Africa Foundation in collaboration with UNICEF and the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.
The platform offers zero rated access to curriculum aligned content from Tanzania Institute of Education (TIE) and Shule Direct, enabling students and teachers to learn and teach without data cost concerns.
The Head of Zanzibar’s Secondary Education Division, Mfaume Jaffary Mfaume said the training empowers teachers to use digital tools for better lesson delivery and learning outcomes.
The workshop was part of Airtel Tanzania’s broader commitment to connect over 1,000 schools by the end of 2025. The telecom company continues to invest in digital infrastructure, community partnerships and stakeholder engagement to expand the reach and impact of the Airtel SmartWasomi programme.
