MC Pilipili honoured for Samaritan heart

DODOMA: MOURNERS have remembered Tanzanian comedian and renowned Master of Ceremony Emmanuel Mathias, popularly known as MC Pilipili, as a man with a Samaritan heart, as hundreds gathered in Dodoma yesterday for his burial.

The comedian passed away on Sunday, November 16, while travelling to a scheduled performance. His brother, Christopher Mathias Matebe, said the family had been briefed on early findings, which indicate that MC Pilipili sustained fatal injuries after being attacked by unknown individuals.

Dodoma Regional Police also confirmed that preliminary investigations suggest he may have died as a result of physical assault, pointing to suspected murder.

Many mourners said they came not only to honour his contribution to comedy, but also his dedication to supporting people in rural areas.

The ceremony drew national leaders, fellow comedians, artists, relatives and members of the public.

Speakers noted that MC Pilipili often travelled to remote villages to meet residents, listen to their concerns and offer assistance — leaving a lasting impact on communities that rarely receive attention.

Minister of Minerals Anthony Mavunde told mourners that MC Pilipili devoted much of his time to helping people in difficult circumstances.

He urged the public to continue supporting the bereaved family, especially his children, and pledged to contribute to their education as a way of honouring the late entertainer’s values.

“MC Pilipili was a good person with a Samaritan heart. He used to go to rural areas to meet people and bring smiles. He helped many. We must continue supporting his family, especially his children. I will take responsibility to ensure his children receive the best education possible,” he said.

Colleagues from the comedy industry reflected on his character and work.

Fellow Master of Ceremony Godfrey Rugarabamu, popularly known as MC Gara B, said MC Pilipili often inspired others with his calmness and gratitude.

He added that many learnt from the way he treated people, and that his absence would be felt both on stage and among colleagues.

Assistant Commissioner William Mwamafupa said investigations into his killing are ongoing and efforts to identify those responsible are continuing.
