Tanzania to receive 260+ SGR freight wagons next month

DAR ES SALAAM: Tanzania is set to receive a total of 264 freight wagons for the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) by the end of this year, the Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) confirmed today.

A cargo ship carrying the consignment departed Dalin Port in China on November 12, 2024.

In a statement issued on Friday, TRC announced that the wagons, manufactured in China, are now en route to Tanzania following their completion and loading.

The shipment includes 200 wagons designed for container transport and 64 for loose cargo. This forms part of the government’s broader efforts to enhance the SGR’s freight capacity and boost the logistics sector.

TRC also noted that the delivery is part of a larger order of 1,430 wagons being manufactured by the Chinese company CRR under a contractual agreement.

Meanwhile, TRC has implemented strict luggage limits for passengers traveling on SGR trains.

Business-class travelers are restricted to 30 kilograms of luggage, while economy-class passengers may carry up to 20 kilograms. Oversized cargo is strictly prohibited on passenger trains.

The awaited wagons are expected to enhance the SGR ability to handle diverse cargo and improve the efficiency of freight transport in the country.
