Tanzania launches Thamini Uhai project in a move to reduce newborn deaths

DODOMA: The Ministry of Health in partnership with Thamini Uhai have launched a project aimed at reducing maternal and newborn deaths in Geita, Katavi, and Kigoma regions.

Speaking during the launch dubbed, ‘Mjamzito na Mtoto Salama project’ in Dodoma region, the  Director of Reproductive, Maternal and Child Health, said that the government has continued to implement strong strategies to reduce maternal deaths by engaging various stakeholders while stressing the importance of training supervisors and stakeholders participating in the project to enhance implementation.

The Mjamzito na Mtoto Salama project is a government-led project and implemented by Thamini Uhai.

Thamini Uhai, Executive Director of Banzi Msumi, thanked the government, noting that they will ensure its implementation to improve maternal and child health services in the three regions.

Thamini Uhai, Director of Projects, Dr Sunday Dominico, said the five-year project has the main goal of strengthening reproductive, maternal, and child health services, including emergency obstetric care and services for premature and low-birth-weight babies.

The project is funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies and the Gates Foundation, which are development partners working with the government in the health sector, where all stakeholders work together to achieve the goal of reducing maternal and newborn deaths in line with the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.
