Samia hands over 35 boats to boost fishing in Tanga

PANGANI: PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan has handed over 35 modern boats worth 4.477bn/- to fishermen in the Tanga Region as part of the second phase of the boat lending project for fishermen across the country.

The handover that took place today, February 26, 2025, in Pangani, Tanga Region, is part of the continued efforts of the Sixth Phase government to boost the fishing sector and ensure that fishermen have access to quality working tools.

The project, managed by the Government through the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, aims to assist fishermen in the Coastal Zone, Lake Victoria, Lake Tanganyika, and Lake Nyasa, to increase productivity in the fishing industry and ensure sustainable fishing practices.

The first phase of the project began in the 2022/2023 financial year with a budget of 11.5bn/-, where 160 boats were lent to 3,163 beneficiaries.

In her remarks, the Minister for Livestock and Fisheries, Dr Ashatu Kijaji, stated that these boats will help increase fish production and combat illegal fishing activities.
