Maasai community encouraged to engage in farming

ARUSHA: RESIDENTS of Monduli, particularly men from the Maasai pastoral society, have been urged to participate in the upcoming farming season by cultivating green gram and peas for their economic development.
Monduli District Commissioner, Mr Festo Kiswaga, issued the call while addressing the people during a rally at Mswakini Village over the weekend.
He emphasised that Monduli residents need to effectively engage in agricultural activities instead of solely relying on livestock to sustain their livelihoods.
“Green gram and peas are profitable crops. Your peers in Babati, Manyara Region, are reaping the benefits of these crops as the price of peas is 3,500/- per kilogram. Your soil is similar to that of Babati, so ensure that in the next farming season, you cultivate these crops,” he insisted.
Mr Kiswaga stated that Monduli District has already established a strategy to ensure the effective implementation of these directives.
“We will conduct door-to-door visits to ensure that everyone is actively involved in farming. We must all agree to embrace this change,” he emphasised.

He announced that agricultural education on cultivating these crops will be provided in all 62 villages of Monduli District.
“Each individual should aim to cultivate two acres of peas and two acres of green gram. We have vast agricultural land in Monduli, so everyone must fully participate once the farming season begins,” he added.
DC Kiswaga also directed all parents with school-aged children to enrol them in school instead of sending them to herd livestock.
He stated that the government has constructed schools with improved infrastructure to provide children with a smooth and free education.
