Government gives WHI 3.3bn/- for teachers’ houses

TANZANIA: THE government has allocated 3.3bn/- to Watumishi Housing Investments (WHI) for the construction of 57 staff houses in five regions.
The houses will be built in Songea (Ruvuma), Mpwapwa (Dodoma), Chalinze (Coast), Iramba (Singida) and Dodoma City and will serve those in educational and healthcare sectors.
The WHI Senior Public Relations and Marketing Officer, Ms Maryjane Makawia, told the ‘Daily News’ over the weekend that the project will be implemented within one year and that they have already received some funding.
“The houses will serve the education and healthcare sectors,” Ms Makawia said adding “the government has recognised this need and is prioritising these sectors.”
The Kakonko Girls’ Secondary School Headmistress, Ms Anatoria Nkabo told ‘Daily News’ over tele interview that by constructing houses close to schools, the government ensures that teachers can be more effective in their roles.
“This initiative not only boosts the morale of teachers but also improves the quality of education by ensuring that educators are more focused and present in their work,” Ms Nkabo said over the weekend.

Additionally, the headmistress said those houses will reduce absenteeism and allowing teachers to be available for after-school activities and emergencies.
Ms Justina Kayuni, a retired teacher said that upon completion of houses will increase teachers’ effectiveness.
“The government’s initiative to build houses for public servants, particularly teachers, is a significant step toward improving their living and working standards.
“Many teachers, especially those in rural or remote areas, have long faced challenges related to inadequate housing and long commutes to their workplaces,” said Ms Kayuni.
WHI currently had constructed over 1000 houses in 19 regions including the Mikocheni Regent Estate, Dodoma Kisasa Hilltop, Bunju-Mabwepande housing project, Kawe apartments and Gezaulole housing project.
