Dr Mwinyi warns against food price hike heading into Ramadhan

ZANZIBAR: THE PRESIDENT of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has said that there is no shortage of food products in the country, so traders have no reason to increase prices of goods during the Holy Month of Ramadhan.
President Mwinyi said this today, January 30, 2026, when he participated in the Friday Prayer Service held at the Fatma Bint Issa Mosque in Kidongo Chekundu, Mjini Magharibi Region.

He stressed that the Month of Ramadan should not be a source of increase in prices of goods, but rather a month of mercy, compassion, and drawing closer to Allah.
In addition, President Dr Mwinyi has urged citizens who are able to help the weak and the powerless, especially during this period of worship.

Dr Mwinyi said the government has already issued instructions to the Zanzibar Fair Trade Commission to ensure that the prices of essential food products, including rice, wheat flour, and sugar, are not increased during the Holy Month of Ramadan, as these products are available in abundance in the country.
