ZANZIBAR: THE government is implementing various strategies to boost clove production as the country’s major cash crop, the House of Representatives heard here yesterday.
Trade and Industrial Development Minister Omar Said Shaaban informed the house that the ministry is working on strategies to increase and improve clove trees, including public awareness on the best crop management practices.
The government through Zanzibar State Trading Corporation, the minister said, is improving clove seedling nurseries and distributing seedlings to farmers to improve production.
And, through the president’s office, finance and planning, the government has formed a task force to prepare clove development policy to ensure the clove industry becomes strong for the benefits of the government and wananchi.
Answering a question by Konde Representative Zawadi Amour Nassor who wanted to know the government plans to rescue the cash crop whose exports are deteriorating, Minister Omar said the trade; and agriculture, irrigation, natural resources and livestock ministries are finalising a study on the dying clove trees, which affect production.
