Zanzibar calls on insurers to back blue economy

ZANZIBAR has invited insurers to support the government’s efforts to improve the economy in the Isles by investing in various development projects implemented by the state.

Zanzibar President, Dr. Hussein Mwinyi told the 44th Organization of Eastern and Southern Africa Insurers (OESAI) forum held on Monday that it is vital for the companies to be part of various investment projects currently implemented in the Isles.

President Mwinyi’s Blue economy policy has gained popularity. The OESAI forum is being held in Zanzibar to deliberate post COVID-19 effects. Zanzibar which heavily depends on the tourism industry was seriously hit by the outbreak that broke in 2019 forcing governments and states to suspend flights and eventually closing their borders.

President Mwinyi highlighted that some of the key sectors under his blue economy include oil and gas sector, fishing, tourism and seaweed farming.

Insurance Commissioner at the Tanzania Insurance Regulatory Authority (TIRA), Dr. Baghayo Abdallah Saqware emphasized that insurance companies are vital in improving the business environment as well as safeguarding both the investors and the people.
