Zanzi Half Marathon postponed to June 2025

ZANZIBAR: THE Zanzi Half Marathon, originally scheduled for December 2024 in Stone Town, Zanzibar, has been postponed.

The annual race, organised by Zanzibar-based running club- Kimbia Bila Shaka, draws participants from various countries and local runners. The event features a 21km half marathon, along with 10km and 5km races and a 5km walking category.

Club’s Founder and Race Organiser, Laura Bjorn, told the ‘Sunday News’ from Zanzibar yesterday that after careful consideration and feedback from participants and partners, the decision was made to move the marathon to June 28, 2025.

“This decision is driven by several factors that we believe will enhance the experience, future impact and comfort for everyone involved,” Laura explained.

She highlighted that many runners expressed a preference for cooler weather, as the heat in Zanzibar during December can be challenging.

“By rescheduling the race to June, we return to our ‘roots’ offering a more comfortable, energising and enjoyable event for all participants,” she noted.

Bjorn also stated that the new date aligns better with the schedules of other running events in the region. It reflects the club’s commitment to promoting growth of sports and fostering a positive, collaborative environment.

Preparations for the race are already underway, with the event poised to make a significant impact on Zanzibar’s tourism and sports scene. Zanzi remains committed to promoting solidarity, courage and gender equality in outdoor activities, while encouraging better health practices in Zanzibar.

“We will continue to create opportunities through sports, encouraging equal participation for women, men, girls and boys in both the weekly Town Run activities and the ZANZI HALF marathon, shaping a healthier and more inclusive future,” Bjorn emphasised.

Apart from organising the annual race, Kimbia Bila Shaka hosts a weekly Town Run every Wednesday in Stone Town, contributing to health and well-being of the local community.

The event also supports the government’s call for Tanzanians to engage in regular exercise and all are encouraged to participate.
