Yanga target new striker as Mzize recovers

ZANZIBAR: YOUNG Africans Head Coach Pedro Gonçalves said the club plans to sign a striker during the January transfer window to strengthen its attacking options as the season enters a demanding phase.

The Portuguese coach was speaking on Tuesday night after Young Africans recorded a 3–0 win over KVZ in the ongoing Mapinduzi Cup at the New Amaan Complex Stadium in Zanzibar.

Gonçalves said the tournament is providing a valuable opportunity to assess his squad, particularly with leading striker Clement Mzize still recovering from injury.

“The season remains challenging, Mzize is sidelined but improving steadily and getting closer to a return. To reinforce the team, we are considering bringing in a new striker,” Gonçalves said.

He said the Mapinduzi Cup was also being used to integrate new signings into the squad, including Emmanuel Mwanengo, who made his first competitive appearance for the club after joining late last year.

“I was pleased with Mwanengo’s composure and quality. New players need time to understand our philosophy. It is a gradual process, and this competition helps us see what they can offer,” Gonçalves said.

KVZ assistant coach Ali Khalid Omar said his side exited the tournament after failing to convert their chances but added that the experience would benefit the team going forward.

“Young Africans are a strong and experienced side,” Omar said.

“We have learned a lot from this match, and it will help us as we prepare for upcoming competitions.”

The Mapinduzi Cup continues tomorrow, with Young Africans set to face TRA United at 2015 local time.
