Yanga plot striker signing ahead of Mapinduzi Cup Semis

DAR ES SALAAM: YOUNG Africans Head Coach Pedro Goncalves has disclosed that the club is eyeing the signing of a new striker during the current transfer window as part of a broader plan to sharpen their attacking edge ahead of a packed and demanding fixture schedule.
Speaking after Yanga wrapped up Mapinduzi Cup group-stage campaign, Goncalves said bolstering the forward line would provide the technical bench with greater tactical flexibility, allowing the team to adapt effectively to different opponents and match situations.
“With a long season and tough fixtures across domestic and continental competitions, squad depth becomes essential and bringing in a striker will help us rotate players and respond better to varying demands of each game,” Goncalves said.
The Portuguese tactician also expressed satisfaction with Yanga’s overall performance in the tournament so far, particularly given the absence of several key players who were on international duty.
He noted that frequent changes to the starting line-up tested the squad’s cohesion, but the team responded with resilience and strong character to book a place in the semi-finals.
The Jangwani-based giants have been without a number of influential figures, including Mali international goalkeeper Djigui Diarra, Zimbabwe striker Prince Dube and Taifa Stars regulars Mohamed Hussein, Dickson Job, Bakari Mwamnyeto and Ibrahim Hamad Abdullah ‘Bacca’.

Their absence forced Goncalves to turn to other members of the squad many of whom seized the opportunity with composed and convincing performances, underlining the depth within the team.
Despite falling to a narrow 1–0 defeat against Yanga, TRA United Head Coach Etienne Ndayiragije praised Yanga for providing a stern test, while commending his own players for discipline and commitment.
The Burundian tactician said his side executed instructions well and competed admirably against one of the country’s strongest teams.
Ndayiragije added that TRA United are making steady progress, citing noticeable improvements in chance creation and spatial awareness on the pitch. He said the technical team is encouraged by how players are gradually addressing identified weaknesses.
He also lauded the organisers of the 2026 Mapinduzi Cup, noting that the tournament has offered him valuable time to work closely with his squad, strengthen team cohesion, and better understand his players ahead of the Tanzania Premier League and preparations to get CAF Confederation Cup campaigns place.
With the win secured, Yanga now turn their focus to a mouth-watering semi-final showdown against Singida Black Stars. The clash is expected to be fiercely contested, with both sides eager to book a place in the final of the prestigious Mapinduzi Cup.
