Yakubu: Engage in physical exercise, yoga
THE government has urged Tanzanians and members of international communities to embrace physical, including Yoga, given its multiple benefits for the human body.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Sports Said Yakubu made the statement on Sunday while commemorating the 9th international day of Yoga organised by the India High Commission to Tanzania.
“Yoga, as we all know, is a mere form of exercise; it is a way of life, a harmonious integration of body, mind and spirit; it is a practice that has stretched across millennia,” he said.
According to him, Tanzania has always been a melting pot of diverse cultures, traditions and beliefs that together unify Tanzanians and people from other parts of the world.
Yakubu was optimistic that the practice of Yoga will continue to spread its roots in Tanzania and to the rest of the world as part of strategies to unify the world.
His statements aligned with remarks by the United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator Zlatan Milisic, who emphasised the importance of making yoga part of daily life.
“It is essentially a spiritual discipline based on an extremely subtle science which focuses on bringing harmony between mind and body. It is an art and science for healthy living,” he said.
For his part, the India High Commissioner to Tanzania, Biyana Srikanta Pradhan, mentioned the benefits of yoga as improving a person’s physical fitness and mental well-being, reducing stress and helping people sleep better.
The International Day of Yoga is celebrated on June 21st every year. It was officially declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 2014, following a proposal by India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi.
The day aims to raise awareness about the many benefits of practicing yoga and promote its holistic approach to health and wellbeing.
More so, the day brings people together worldwide to participate in yoga sessions, workshops, discussions, and various events. It emphasises the importance of incorporating yoga into daily life for individuals of all ages and backgrounds.
