Women advised to embrace VICOBA for empowerment

DAR ES SALAAM: WOMEN across the country have been urged to embrace VICOBA community-based savings and loan groups as a proven way to boost economic resilience and social cohesion.

The call comes from Mama na Mwana Care- a grassroots initiative leading efforts to transform women’s lives through financial empowerment.

Mama na Mwana Care Executive Director, Ms Jiang Alipo, said the organisation has established 15 VICOBA groups with over 300 active members experiencing improved financial stability and stronger social networks.

“We encourage women to take the first step and join a group. Here, they don’t just save and borrow they build families, form strong bonds and support one another,” Ms Alipo said.

Noting the impact of VICOBA groups, Ms Alipo explained, “Through these groups, members receive training in saving, financial planning, goal setting and disciplined borrowing. Women use these tools to pay school fees, start small businesses, invest in housing projects and manage daily household expenses with greater confidence.”

However, she acknowledged challenges, particularly in management.

“When leaders are absent or inactive, some groups struggle with rule enforcement and accountability.”

To address this, Mama na Mwana Care provides leadership and governance training to ensure the groups’ longterm sustainability.

Ms Alipo also highlighted the organization’s active participation in national events like the Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair (DITF), which has boosted their visibility and attracted partners interested in supporting grassroots women’s empowerment.

“We have formed important partnerships that will help us expand and strengthen our work. Exhibitions have been invaluable for raising awareness about the power of VICOBA,” she said.

Emphasizing the value of community, she added, “Human development thrives on connection. Through these groups, women find sisters, friends and mentors. The support system that grows out of VICOBA is priceless.”

Loan Officer of Tuinuane Group VICOBA, Mr Saiba Abdalah, highlighted the benefits to members and the wider community.

He noted that members access loans on more affordable terms than formal institutions, often without complicated collateral requirements.

“Members develop the habit of saving regularly weekly or monthly which helps them manage finances more effectively,” he said.

“Funds borrowed through VICOBA are frequently used to start or expand small businesses, increasing household incomes and improving livelihoods. The groups also empower women and youth, strengthening their voice in family and community decisions.”

Additionally, members support each other financially during emergencies such as illness, bereavement, or school fees, easing the burden of unexpected challenges.

These groups foster unity and trust, with members often collaborating on activities beyond financial matters.
