WaterAid Tanzania marks Menstrual Hygiene Day in style
WATERAID Tanzania staff joined hands with colleagues from Water Aid East Africa to hand over WASH rehabilitation project at Misima Secondary School in Handeni District yesterday as part of commemoration of Menstrual Hygiene Day.
Menstrual Hygiene Day is an annual awareness day observed on May 28 to highlight the importance of good menstrual hygiene management at a global level.
During the celebrations, WaterAid Tanzania handed over rehabilitated water tanks, school latrines, rainwater harvesting systems and laundry.
During the project implementation, WAT also capacitated students with menstrual hygiene awareness and taught students how to make reusable pads.
WaterAid Tanzania also handed over 440 pieces of disposable pads (to be used during a rainy season), 40 reusable sewing kits for students to make reusable pads, a sewing machine, a television for students to learn more about hygiene through hygiene awareness videos and three sports kits for the sports club.
Students’ WASH club at Misima also demonstrated before Guest of Honor, Handeni District Commissioner representative, Ms Upendo Magashi how to make reusable pads as they were taught by trainers during the project implementation.
Ms Magashi during her speech insisted that students and teachers should use water in caution and take care of the WASH facilities they were handed over with care for better project sustainability.
The project was jointly funded by Hilton Global Foundation and WaterAid.
WaterAid Tanzania Country Director, Ms Anna Mzinga said the organisation has managed to rehabilitate some of the water infrastructure systems, water storage tanks, latrines which are friendly to students with special needs and provide education about girls and boys hygiene in their maturity stages.
The awareness creation included special training on how the girls can make their own sanitary pads and use them during menstruation.
