USAID, Tanzania join forces ‘to Score’ for public health during AFCON
Building on the success of the kick-off event in Temeke MC during the clash between Tanzania’s Taifa Stars and the Morocco national team, the initiative has now reached new heights with the second community-level watch party in Kibiti DC, aligning perfectly with the AFCON games.
Beyond entertaining football enthusiasts, this event strategically promoted healthy behaviors, delivering crucial prevention messages, and providing essential health information and services.
The initiative showcased a unique and innovative approach to public health, using the excitement of football to score big on community well-being.
Attendees had access to services such as COVID-19 vaccines and boosters, routine immunization vaccines, health checks including HIV counselling, testing, and prevention services.
The watch party, officiated by Mohamed Omary Mchengerwa (Minister, PO-RALG), highlighted, “The collaboration between USAID and the Government of Tanzania exemplifies the strength of partnerships in advancing public health initiatives. Joining forces with USAID Breakthrough ACTION goes beyond creating impacts; it is about building healthier communities. The ‘Timu Chanjwa’ campaign is a testament to our shared commitment to vaccine advocacy and strengthening immunization strategies.”
He underscored the importance of vaccines against diseases and the integration of HIV prevention and treatment services at community events.
With the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations offering a unique opportunity to reach millions across the continent, Breakthrough ACTION’s multimedia campaign, ‘Timu Chanjwa,’ seizes this excitement, emphasizing a robust social norm for the COVID-19 vaccine and other vaccinations across life stages.
Beyond TV commercials, radio spots, and a dynamic social media presence, the project has strategically organized community watch parties around the games to champion COVID-19 vaccination and encourage routine immunizations.
Health services, including HIV counselling, testing, and prevention, are seamlessly integrated into these events.
Designed as a unique fusion of entertainment and critical health services, the event engages the entire community, providing a platform to come together, celebrate, and passionately cheer for their favorite teams.
On-site health services shine a spotlight on USAID’s commitment to supporting government efforts for increased vaccine uptake, harmonized with immunization strategies in mainland Tanzania.
This multifaceted campaign not only celebrates the spirit of football but serves as a dynamic platform to promote public health within local communities.
It underscores the importance of routine immunizations and HIV prevention and treatment services during the AFCON tournaments.
In a statement, Craig Hart, USAID Mission Director, remarked: “This collaboration underscores our commitment to advancing public health and building resilient communities.
“By harnessing the excitement of AFCON, we aim to create a lasting impact on health awareness and services. Together with our partners, we take pride in spearheading this transformative initiative that aligns with our mission to enhance the well-being of people in Tanzania.”
