Tanzania Medicines and Medical Devices Authority (TMDA)

THE Tanzania Medicines and Medical Devices Authority (TMDA) has reminded importers and suppliers of drugs and medical equipment over observing laws and regulations to protect people’s health.

The authority issued the reminder in Dar es Salaam on Tuesday in a meeting with the importers and suppliers organized to build more understanding and updating them on the new regulations and laws governing medicines and medical devices in the country.

TMDA’s manager for eastern zone, who officiated the workshop, Mr Adonis Bitegeko, told journalists that the seminar was crucial since it took the participants through the authority’s guidelines and regulatory systems for supplying and importing drugs and medical devices.

“In such annual meeting with the importers and suppliers we also get a chance to hear from their challenges and find solutions,” Mr Bitegeko noted.

“It is important to build their capacity regularly because medical devices are changing due to rapid technological changes. We have seen positive changes through these meetings,” he argued.

In other development, the TMDA assured the dealers that it would focus on empowering them in doing business of medicines and medical devices instead of closing their businesses in implementation of the government’s directives embedded in the 2023/24 national budget.

“We are going in line with government’s agenda we encourage them to do business we will not compromise quality of drugs and medical devices in protecting people’s health,” he emphasised.

He pointed out that the TMDA has at the forefront in enabling businesses, noting that when a dealer goes against the procedures and regulations the authority brings him or her back to the track.

One of participants, Ms Caryne Cyprian from the Philips Pharmacetical Company, commended that such meeting was useful because they got chance to speak out their views so that the TMDA could work on them for more improvement.
